Amid the chaos of Russia's invasion of Ukraine, Natalia and Serhiy, a couple of artists separated by occupation, quickly lose any contact. They feel paralyzed, drowning in helplessness and uncertainty. At the same time, the soldiers of the 72nd brigade of the Armed Forces, Vitaliy and Serhiy, building unity and finding courage guarding “the road of life”, a planned evacuation route for civilians. Priest Andriy Halavin is tending to the region's first mass burials on the territory of his church. Almost daily he welcomes international delegations to share evidence of Russia's atrocities, while continuing to be the source of healing for locals who survived the occupation.
“Flowers beyond the Dark” is an artful exploration of the human side of war, a raw witness account of people who know what it’s like to stare the enemy in the eyes, feel the pain, yet maintain hope and determination for victory. We get to know them, follow them in church, at home, behind the artist’s canvas, inside the trenches and in armored vehicles.

Один із розділів присвячений родині художників Сергія та Наталі, які возз’єднуються після російської окупації. Вони перевідкривають одне одного, спільно працюючи над зціленням стосунків, які зазнали випробувань через драматичні події.

The first chapter of the film is dedicated to a family of artists Serhiy and Natalia who are reunited after being separated by occupation. They are rediscovering each other and working together to heal their relationship, shaken by the dramatic events.
Can they overcome this challenge and save their love?
Наступний розділ присвячено Андрію Галавіну, настоятелю Храму Святого Апостола Андрія Первозванного (ПЦУ) у м. Буча, який майже щодня зустрічає міжнародні делегації поблизу місця ексгумації тіл на території церкви, розповідаючи історії закатованих мирних жителів.
Чи зможе він осмислити трагедію, що сталася в місці Божому?
The next chapter is focused on Andriy Halavin, an Orthodox priest of the St. Andrew Church in Bucha who is greeting international delegations almost daily near the site of body exhumations on the territory of his church and tells stories of tortured civilian victims.
Can he make sense of the tragedy that happened in the place of God?
Остання сюжетна лінія розповідає про Віталія (“Булата”) та Сергія (“Удмурта”), водія та механіка БМП 72 бригади ім. Чорних Запорожців. Їхня бригада зупинила ворога від прориву до столиці та забезпечила евакуацію цивільних з Чернігова. Побратими продовжують виконувати свої обов'язки на передовій, переосмислюючи сенс життя, гідність і відповідальність перед Батьківщиною та родинами.
Коли вони повернуться додому? І якою ціною?
The last plot line is about Vitaliy and Serhiy, soldiers of The Ukrainian Ground Forces of the 72nd Brigade waking up inside their Infantry fighting vehicle (IFV). Their brigade was tasked to stop the enemy from entering the capital, as well as to support the civilian evacuations from Chernihiv. Now they continue fulfilling their duties at the front lines while finding comradeship, reevaluating the meaning of life, dignity, and responsibilities to their homeland and families.
When will they return home? And at what cost?

In this video, you will hear intercepted conversations by the Security Service of Ukraine of russian soldiers communicating with their relatives in russia during the war in Ukraine.
The video was created by the project's director, Iryna Pravylo, on April 2, 2022, as a creative response to the horror that the world witnessed after the de-occupation of Bucha. Within a week, the fury turned into the process of filming materials for the future film "Flowers Beyond the Dark".

Відео зроблено режисеркою проєкту Іриною Правило 2 квітня 2022 року, як творча реакція на жах, який побачив світ після деокупації міста Буча. Вже за тиждень лють перетворилась у процес фільмування матеріалів майбутньої стрічки “Квіти на темному тлі“.
